I finally got my CL450 tuned. The original ignition advance springs were worn out, so it took me a while I get it sorted. I wanted to keep the original ignition, but didn’t want to spend $100 on a new mechanical advance kit from Honda. I ended up cutting one of the original springs in half. It’s not perfect, but it’s an old ratty bike, so who cares. Here’s a vid after I set the timing before balancing the carbs.

I was going to wait until tomorrow to balance the carbs, but after a few beers I decided to do it tonight. I didn’t use an actual balancing tool. I just got each carb idling in sync by unplugging the opposing plug wire and adjusting the idle and fuel mixture screws. A little trial and error and she was idling pretty good with good throttle response and no backfiring.

Im running the original ignition system and carbs, with a homemade 40k uF capacitor in place of a battery. This is probably as good an idle as I can expect from this set up. All I have left to do is set up my foot controls and I’ll be good to go. I’ll probably end up extending the pipes out a bit, but will probably leave them un-muffled.
